“Coming together is a beginning…Keeping together is progress…Working together is a success.” – Henry Ford

Megan LaffertyHi! My name is Megan Lafferty, and I am currently the Secretary on the Minnesota ASQ Section Executive Board. I graduated in May of 2006 from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana with a degree in biomedical engineering. I am currently a Quality Systems Engineer at Boston Scientific. When I’m not at work, you can find me on the tennis court or cheering for my Indianapolis Colts. After two years in the business, I would like to share with you four lessons I have learned.

Importance of Quality – When I was applying for jobs just over two years ago, I had no idea what quality meant to a medical device company. I took a job coordinating the Quality Management Review and organizing and implementing quality metrics and trending reviews across our plant. It has given me the opportunity to learn about all of the key quality systems in a business and how important quality is to the success of a company. It has made me realize that every product needs to be the highest quality for our customers. I’ve truly developed a passion for quality.

Appreciation for Mentors – I would not be in the position I am today without the many mentors with whom I have worked. It was very intimidating going into a job interview as a recent college graduate when there was hardly anything in the “experience” section of my resume. I am very appreciative to my supervisor for giving me the chance. He has taught me the lessons of my job that college doesn’t teach, and he has painted my path to be successful. I am also very thankful for all my co-workers who have mentored me. I encourage all of you who are far in your career path to reach out to the new ones. I would not be where I am today if people didn’t do that for me!

ASQ Membership – Being a member of ASQ has shown me how to further develop my career in quality. I encourage all of you who are in a similar position early in your career to look into ASQ. We provide many things to help you on a successful path: certifications, workshops, conferences, etc. ASQ has taught me how important our industry is, and what tools they offer to help me be successful.

Success – Referring back to the quote at the top, I have learned what defines success in our industry: delivering the best product to our customers and improving their lives. I have learned that success takes teamwork. I’ve learned that quality takes a lot of work, but it means doing the right thing. I wake up and want to go to work each and every day because I know I am having an impact on the quality of people’s lives.
